Bachelor of Education (Arts) Profile

The Bachelor of Education (Arts) Programme is designed to prepare teachers and Educators within the teacher training prescriptions of the Ministry of Education and the Secondary School system in Kenya. The BEd programme is run on an integrated basis where the professional and academic contents are offered as determined by the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) and the Commission for University Education (CUE). The Bachelor of Education (Arts) curriculum includes Foundation Courses in Education which are taken by all education students. Students are expected to choose two teaching subjects that are offered in the Program. These subjects must correspond to the curriculum offered in Secondary Schools and other equivalent institutions in Kenya’s Education system. Students select two teaching subjects from the following subject areas:-

  1. English
  2. Literature
  3. Geography
  4. History
  5. Religious Education
  6. Business Studies
  7. Kiswahili
  8. Mathematics

At SCU we endeavor to produce well-disciplined and godly, professional teachers, who will not only impart knowledge, but also provide mentorship for the high school students (teenagers) in our society.

Upon completion of the Programs, the student will be well prepared to:

  1. Take active and excellent career in all facets of the profession of Education;
    Teach two subjects at the secondary school level;
  2. further Education and training in their areas of interest and specialization and obtain a Master of Education degree;
  3. work and contribute to the national goals of Education and development through Educational Agencies and Departments in the Ministry of Education and devolved government.

Admission Requirements

  1. KCSE certificate with mean grade C+
  2. Mean grade of C+ in each of the TWO teaching Subjects.

Course Structure and Duration
The Bachelor of Education (Arts) programme (BEd Arts) takes a period of four academic years. Each year consists of two semesters of seventeen (15) weeks each. In addition, the students shall take twelve (12) weeks of Teaching Practice in approved secondary school.  During Teaching Practice, the students shall be assessed twice in line with Ministry of Education requirements.

The Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education prepares the student to possess skills that enable children to explore and discover as a way of learning by becoming highly engaged and actively involved in their interdependence between people, plants, animals and the environment.

ECD Objectives

The general objectives of ECD programme are to:

  1. Provide education geared towards development of the child’s mental capabilities and physical growth
  2. Enable the child enjoy living and learning through play
  3. Develop the child’s self-awareness, self-esteem and self confidence
  4. Enable the child to develop understanding and appreciation of his/her culture and environment
  5. Foster the child’s exploration skills, creativity, self-expression and discovery
  6. Identify children with special needs and align them with existing services
  7. Enable the child build good habits and acquire acceptable values and behaviors for effective living as an individual and a member of a group
  8. Foster the spiritual and moral growth of the child
  9. Improve the status of the child’s health, care and nutritional needs and link him/her to health services such as immunization, health check-ups and growth monitoring
  10. Enrich the child’s experiences to enable him/her to cope better future school life
  11. Develop the child’s aesthetic and artistic skills.

Entry Requirements

  1.  Mean grade C+ (plus) at KCSE or its Equivalent  OR
  2. Mean grade C (Plain) at KCSE or an Equivalent with Diploma in Early Childhood education from a recognized Institution. OR
  3. P1 Certificate with a mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE level, Diploma in Early Childhood education from a recognized Institution and two years teaching experience. OR
  4. KACE or equivalent Certificate with a minimum of the two principal passes and O-level Credit in Mathematics and one other subject.
